A Petaluma Parent’s Guide to the Words You Will Hear at a Family Chiropractor’s Office

Walking into a new health office can feel like walking into a conversation that started without you. There are words on the wall, words on the paperwork, and words the doctor says out loud like everyone already knows them.

Parents in Petaluma, Penngrove, and Cotati tell us this all the time. They nodded along at a first visit, got in the car, and then thought, wait, what did half of that actually mean?

That is on us, not on you. You should never have to guess about your own body, or your child’s.

So here is a plain-English guide to the words you will hear at Titan Chiropractic, our family chiropractic office in Petaluma. No jargon. No pressure. Just the language, explained the way we would explain it to a friend standing on the sideline at a Petaluma soccer game.

Your nervous system, in one paragraph

Your nervous system is your brain, your spinal cord, and the nerves that branch out to every part of you. It is the wiring. It runs your heart rate, your breathing, your digestion, your sleep, your focus, and every movement you make. You never have to think about any of it. That is the whole point.

Here is the frame behind everything we do at Titan. Your body is designed to work at one hundred percent. Symptoms are signals. When the nervous system gets overloaded, function slips. Clear the stress pattern, and the body goes back to doing what it already knows how to do.

Subluxation

This is the biggest word in the office, so we keep the explanation simple.

Think about the breaker box in your house. When too much load runs through one circuit, the breaker trips. Nothing in the house is broken. The wiring is fine. The power just stopped flowing the way it should to one area.

Subluxation is our word for that same idea in the spine and nervous system. Stress stacks up, the signal between brain and body gets muddy, and things stop coordinating the way they used to. Nothing is broken. The connection just needs help.

The other picture we use is Highway 101. Your brain and spinal cord are the freeway. Your nerves are the on ramps and off ramps to every town. One wreck in the wrong lane and traffic backs up for miles in places that had nothing to do with the crash.

The adjustment

An adjustment is a specific, gentle input we give to one exact spot along the spine.

It is not a twist. It is not force. With a baby, the pressure is about what you would use to check whether a tomato at the Petaluma farmers market is ripe. Most parents watch their infant’s first adjustment and say, that was it?

Yes. That was it.

The goal is not to shove a bone somewhere and walk away. The goal is to give the nervous system clear information so it can let go of a stress pattern it has been holding. The body does the healing. We just help clear the line.

Zone Technique, and the Zone Slip you take home

Zone Technique is the method Dr. Reilly uses. It goes back to Dr. Thurman Fleet in 1931 and was modernized by Dr. Peter Goldman. It is the only method we use, which is on purpose. We would rather be excellent at one thing than average at ten.

It works off six zones, which are six systems the brain runs:

Glandular, which covers hormones and energy. Eliminative, which covers how the body clears waste. Nervous, which covers mood, sleep, and focus. Digestive, which covers the stomach and gut. Muscular, which covers posture and tone. Circulatory, which covers the heart and blood flow.

At each visit, Dr. Reilly does a head check at six points to see which zone is asking for attention that day. Then he adjusts the specific spinal points tied to that zone.

The Zone Slip is the little paper you walk out with. It tells you which zone we worked on that day. Parents love these. Stick them on the fridge and you start to see your own family’s pattern over a month.

The scans, and what each one actually looks at

We do not want you taking our word for anything. So before we make a plan, we scan. These are the INSIGHT scans, and there are three of them. None of them hurt. None of them use radiation. Kids usually think they are fun.

neuroCORE looks at the electrical activity along your spine. Think of it as how much nerve energy is running through the wiring, and whether it is balanced side to side.

neuroTHERMAL reads the heat pattern down your spine. That pattern is run by the automatic nerves, the ones that quietly control your organs and glands without you asking.

neuroPULSE looks at the rhythm of your heartbeat. This is the one where we talk about a gas pedal and a brake. A healthy nervous system can hit the gas when life demands it and then actually come back down to the brake. Some people get stuck with a foot on the gas.

CORESCORE, and why we always scan again

The three scans combine into one number between zero and one hundred. That is your CORESCORE.

The first number is not the point. The second one is. We re-scan on the same machine, at the same time of day, in the same conditions, so the comparison is honest. That graph is the proof, not our opinion.

This is what we mean when we say, we don’t guess. We test, adjust, and retest.

Care plan, and progress exam

A care plan is the schedule of visits we recommend after we have seen your scans and heard your story. It is built for you, not pulled off a shelf. Most run a couple of months, a few visits per week, and you will know the whole picture before you agree to anything.

A progress exam is when we run those same scans again partway through and sit down with you to compare. Sometimes the numbers move and we celebrate. Sometimes they stay flat, and we say so plainly and talk about what to change. Both are useful. A flat graph is information.

Wellness care

When a care plan finishes, most families do not want to stop. Wellness care is the lighter, ongoing rhythm after the initial plan, usually a set number of visits per month for whoever in the house wants them.

Think of the rings in a Sonoma County redwood. Nothing dramatic happens in any single year. The strength comes from the rhythm.

Is this you? If you have been meaning to ask someone what all of this actually involves for your family, you can schedule a visit or just call and ask questions first. Nobody will push you.

Webster Technique, and ICPA

If you are pregnant, you will hear these two.

Webster Technique is a specific way of checking and adjusting the pelvis during pregnancy. It looks at the sacrum, the two hip bones, and the ligaments around them, and it supports balance and comfort as the body changes. Dr. Reilly is certified in it.

One thing worth being clear about, because it gets mixed up constantly. Webster works with the bones and ligaments of the pelvis. Pelvic floor work is a different job, focused on muscles and soft tissue, and it belongs with a pelvic floor physical therapist. We will happily point you toward one.

ICPA stands for the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. It is the organization that certifies and continues to train chiropractors who work with pregnant moms and kids. Dr. Reilly is a member and keeps that training current.

Adjusted, and checked

Last two, and they are small but they matter.

We say a person got adjusted when we actually delivered an adjustment. We say a person got checked when we did the head check and analysis and the body did not need one that day. Both are a real visit. Not needing an adjustment is a good day, and we will tell you so.

What this all adds up to

Every one of these words points back to the same simple idea. Your body is designed to work at one hundred percent. Your nervous system runs the show. When it is overloaded, function slips. When the signal is clear, the body self corrects.

That is it. That is the whole philosophy. Everything else is vocabulary.

If you have questions we did not cover here, ask them. Bring a list to your first visit. Text them to us. Ask us at a community event. We would rather spend ten extra minutes explaining something than have you nodding along in the chair.

Strong. Clear. Unshakable. That is what we want for every family in Petaluma, Penngrove, Cotati, Rohnert Park, and across Sonoma County and the North Bay.
