A Petaluma Mom’s Guide to Chiropractic Through Pregnancy and the Fourth Trimester

Pregnancy asks a lot of a mom's body. In about nine months, your body builds a whole new person. Your posture shifts. Your sleep changes. Your hormones rise and fall. And your nervous system, the brain, spinal cord, and nerves that run everything, is working overtime the whole way through.

Many moms in Petaluma, Penngrove, Cotati, and Rohnert Park ask us the same question: "When should chiropractic fit into all of this?" This guide walks through each stage, from the first weeks to the months after your baby arrives. No pressure, just a clear picture so you know what to expect.

Why the nervous system matters so much during pregnancy

Your body is designed to work at 100%. Your nervous system is the boss that keeps it that way. It tells your heart how fast to beat, your gut how to digest, and your body how to adapt to every change pregnancy brings.

Think of it like the breaker box in your house. When too much runs at once, a breaker trips and the lights flicker. Pregnancy plugs in a lot of new appliances at once. Gentle adjustments help clear stress patterns so the circuits can keep flowing and your body can do what it was built to do.

That is the heart of our prenatal chiropractic care: support the nervous system so your body can adapt with more ease.

The first trimester: getting a baseline

Many moms start care early in pregnancy, and some start before they are even expecting. Early is a great time to get a baseline. A baseline is a starting snapshot we can compare to later.

At your first visit, we talk about your health story and your pregnancy so far. Then we run our INSIGHT scans. They are gentle, non-invasive, and use no radiation. Here is what each one looks at, in plain words.

neuroCORE reads the electrical activity, the nerve energy, along your spine.

neuroTHERMAL reads the heat pattern down your spine, which is run by the automatic nerves that control your organs and glands.

neuroPULSE reads the rhythm of your heartbeat. It shows the balance between your gas pedal (go and stress) and your brake (rest and calm).

CORESCORE rolls all three into one number from 0 to 100.

We don't guess. We test, adjust, and retest.

The second trimester: settling into a rhythm

The middle months are often when moms feel their best. It is also when your belly starts to grow fast and your center of balance moves forward.

Visits in this stage have a steady rhythm. We check how your nervous system is doing, give a gentle adjustment, and make sure you feel comfortable the whole time. We position you with support so you never have to lie flat on your belly. Most visits are short and calm.

Is this you? Expecting, busy, and wondering if a gentle check-in could help you feel more like yourself? Schedule a visit and we will talk through it together.

The third trimester: preparing for birth

In the final months, your pelvis gets a lot of our attention. The pelvis is the ring of bones your baby rests inside. Dr. Reilly is Webster-certified through the ICPA (the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association). The Webster Technique is a specific, gentle way to check and adjust the pelvis and the sacrum, the triangle-shaped bone at the base of the spine.

The goal is balance. When the bones and ligaments of the pelvis are balanced, your body has more room to move and adapt as your due date gets close. Many moms come a little more often in these weeks. We build that plan with you, based on your scans and how you feel.

The fourth trimester: caring for mom after baby arrives

The fourth trimester is the first three months after birth. It is a real stage, even though it gets talked about less. Your body is healing. Your sleep is broken into little pieces. You are feeding, rocking, and carrying a baby all day long.

That is a lot of load on one nervous system. Coming back in after birth helps us see how your body is adjusting to this new season. We re-scan, compare to your baseline, and keep care gentle. And yes, you can bring the baby. Babies are welcome here.

Your baby's first check

Birth is a big journey for a little body too. Many Sonoma County parents like to have their baby checked in the first weeks. A newborn adjustment is very gentle. We use about the pressure you would use to test a ripe tomato.

We look at how your baby's nervous system is doing and walk you through everything we see. You can learn more about how we care for little ones on our pediatric chiropractic page.
